The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This is the first part of my 2024 Halloween costume, inspired by Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Check out the next project to see me metamorphosize into a butterfly!

The idea for this two-part costume came after I bought a Very Hungry Caterpillar shirt and decided to turn it into a full transformation. I knew I wanted to do something special for Halloween, and the concept of starting as the caterpillar and becoming the butterfly felt perfect.

Making this costume was such a fun challenge. The main body and hat are made from fleece, while the caterpillar’s feet are crafted from felt. I used poly-fill stuffing to shape the long tail. Flipping the tiny feet inside out after sewing them was easily the most frustrating part. I spent a lot of time adding details to the back. I cut strips of colorful yarn, taped them in place with scotch tape, and sewed them down to close the back of the costume. That part alone took hours.

I worked on this costume for over two months, and while I didn’t document much of the process, I loved how it turned out. Halloween is my favorite, and bringing this transformation to life was one of my best projects yet!
